Night wind seeped through my jeans
and through your hair, so you held me close
as we walked through dried yellow grass
that crunched in the cold beneath my boots.
We had driven to a spot just outside of town
to stare at stars and still the evening.
I don’t know how long we lay on that hill
but after awhile, I could not feel my legs.
I zipped my jacket and tucked my knees,
determined not to admit that I felt frozen –
you suggested we leave,
and, despite how badly I wanted to warm up,
being there with you
was more appealing than the car.
I liked how small the sky made me feel,
and I liked feeling small with you
beneath the glowing yellow moon.
